Organic Hibiscus is slightly tart and fruit flavored with notes of citrus and pomegranate. It brews into a deep scarlet infusion and is delicious hot or iced. The blossoms are hand-picked from the Hibiscus Sabdariffa varietal when the flowers of this shrub become full and after harvesting are sun dried. Hibiscus is known to have a high vitamin C content and other beneficial health properties. Other than tea, the hibiscus is also used to create other drinks. In Jamaica, for example, an iced drink derived from hibiscus is very popular. Try adding a bit of honey or organic cane sugar to your hibiscus infusion to balance the tartness and bring out the fruity sweet potential.
Heat water (filtered, if possible) to a low boil, add one generous teaspoon of loose leaf tea per cup (apprx. 8 ounces). Infuse the tea for 4–5 minutes depending on taste preference.
INGREDIENTS: Organic hibiscus petals from Egypt.
Zen Tara Tea produces both single ingredient botanical teas and botanical blends. Although Hibiscus is an enhancer used in many botanical blends, Hibiscus by itself has been enjoyed for centuries brewed into a hot infusion or prepared and then chilled. Recent studies on its ability to help lower blood pressure have added to traditional health benefits of having a high level of vitamin C, contributing to a healthy digestive system and helping fight against bladder infections.
A new study published in the Journal of Human Hypertension, 2009:23(1):48-54 focused on the potential effects of Hibiscus Tea to help lower blood pressure, particularly for those with Type 2 Diabetes. This study confirmed the growing body of evidence that Hibsicus Tea has therapeutic effectiveness over a 30 day trial period during which participants drank 2 cups of Hibiscus Tea a day.
