Gun Powder (Zhu Cha) Tea is both unappreciated and wildly popular at the same time. It was one of the first teas exported from China to England in the 18th century and in the 1850's England in turn heavily exported it to Morocco and North Africa where it was blended with traditional mint leaf teas. In China; however, it is rarely drunk despite it occupying the top position in tea production. The local view of the tea is that it is just an average quality green tea (despite the fact that there are 16 official grade levels for Gunpowder tea).
Our Organic Gunpowder Green Tea is a higher "Temple of Heaven" grade. The leaves of this tea are rolled into the shape of little pellets (the smaller the pellet the higher the grade). Gunpowder tea tastes earthy and strong for a green tea, with a subtle hint of smoky flavor and a slight sweet, astringent aftertaste. Many tea drinkers in the west consider this variety of tea to be their "typical" green tea, likely a result of it having historically been one of the first high volume green tea exports from China.
HOW TO PREPARE THE TEA: Heat water (filtered, if possible) and cool to 180˚F. Add a little less than one teaspoon loose leaf tea per cup (apprx. 8 ounces). Infuse the tea leaves for 3–4 minutes depending on taste preference. Can be infused a second time. Also, try Gunpowder tea Moroccan style by adding mint leaves and sugar after the tea has brewed (hot or iced).
