Organic Earl Grey Green Tea

To tea traditionalists, blending an Earl Grey tea with green rather than black tea may sound upsetting - why mess with something tried and true? Think of it as exchanging one tradition for another. Citrus flavors have a long history of blending smoothly with green teas and the Italian Bergamot citrus fruit that provides the signature aroma and flavor of Earl Grey teas when balanced for a lighter green tea profile creates an exceptional tea.

Even if you are not enamored of the black tea version of Earl Grey, give the green tea version a try. We speak from experience in this regard as one of the owners of Zen Tara Tea never particularly liked Earl Grey black tea (a slightly awkward condition when Earl Grey is one of the most popular tea blends in the world and you own a tea shop). While the green tea version still has a pronounced bergamot note, it doesn't seem to clash with the body of the rest of the tea and now everyone at the shop has a favorite version of Earl Grey they can wholeheartedly endorse!

Technically, he was the Second Earl Grey, Charles Grey, also known as Viscount Horwick, he served as British Prime Minister from 1830-34. As the story goes, a grateful Chinese mandarin whose son was rescued from drowning by one of Lord Grey's men presented a gift of thanks of this specially scented black tea blend.

Our organic Earl Grey green tea is a blend of green tea from China infused with true bergamot essence.

How to Brew Earl Grey Green Tea

Heat water (filtered if possible) to boiling and let it cool a few minutes to around 175˚F and add one full teaspoon loose leaf tea per cup (apprx. 8 ounces). Infuse the loose tea for 2-3 minutes, depending on taste preference. A second infusion of the leaves can be made which will have a moderated bergamot flavor and a stronger green tea taste. Brew the second infusion for 2 minutes in 175˚F water.
