Bancha is a common style of traditional Japanese green tea made of leaves and stems from the late season harvests. The Bancha tea harvest is from the same tea plants that provide the higher Sencha grade of tea in the spring. For those new to Japanese green teas, Bancha tea is a great introductory tea at a modest price with a refreshing vegetal, grassy flavor and a pleasant mildy roasted aroma.
In Japan, Bancha green tea is popular as a daily tea and is inbued with healthy ingredients such as theanine, catechins (polyphenols), flavonoids, vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids. Bancha green tea is typically lower in caffeine than many other green teas because the broad, course leaves are harvested late in the season.
Heat water to 185°F and add one full teaspoon per 8 ounce cup. Infuse for 2–3 minutes, can be infused a second time.
